volatility around the world that it has called into question some of the policies that barack obama has put into place. to the extent that he can highlight that, i think mitt romney wants to do that. he wants to call into question the president's judgment on an area where he had a good lead, where the president has passed that commander in chief test in 2008 getting elected to the presidency. that's what he's trying to do. i think it's mostly about the economy. >> i'm going to agree with jonathan here. this is an election certainly about the economy. when they go into the voting booths on voting day, it's about the economy. i think romney has the opportunity here and needs to take it. to link obama's economic policies with his foreign policies, i don't think he should go after romney on the philosophical differences between his foreign policy and obama's. frankly, it's hard to figure out what obama's foreign policy philosophy is. he needs to talk about broken promises and incompetent and link the broken promises and incompetent and the foreign policy to those in the economic policy. i thoug

of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual pla

're learning that the obama campaign raked in a whopping $181 million in september. that is the most either side has raised in a single month this election cycle. no word yet on the romney camp's monthly total, but the campaign does say it collected more than $12 million in online donations. that is just since wednesday's debate. team romney is also rolling out a new tv ad today, featuring a former obama supporter, who says she has changed his mind. >> i'm disappointed in barack obama as my president, because he promised to bring us all together. and we're all going to be able to prosper. i don't see the prospering. >> and big news out of ohio, where an appeals court has upheld a ruling that reinstates early voting on the final three days before election day. the ruling means that people in ohio can continue to cast their ballots up until election day, depending on the decisions of local election boards. it's a win for the obama campaign, which has filed a lawsuit arguing everyone should be able to vote on those days. we'll have more on all these stories throughout the next three hours. >>>

the country in that the unemployment rate went down and i would say good news politically for president obama because now the talking point that republicans have used effectively for quite some time to say, you know, 42 straight months of an unemployment over 8%, unemployment had been over 8% every month since barack obama took office, they no longer can say that. to your point it didn't drop to 4%, it's still 7.8%. i would say if you ask barack obama on the day he took office if he -- if he thought unemployment at 7.8% would be okay in the month before he needed to run for re-election, he would not be happy with that number, but it's about the trend line, the trend line suggests and again, one month is not determinative but suggests that perhaps things are the economy is strengthening a little bit. that's the argument obama needs. he needs data points to say it's not perfect, i know that, not everything i've done is perfect to fix it, but it's slowly but surely a lurching toward getting better. >> the republicans will focus on the slowly part of that, only 114,000 new jobs added, anemic by a

obama leading 49% to 46% among likely voters. again, within the margin of error and closer than it was two weeks ago. on the direction of the country, 40% say we're heading in the right direction. 53% say things are on the wrong track. 40% is the highest mark for this question in 3 1/2 years. there's also growing optimism about the economy. 57% say it's improving. that's the highest number this poll has recorded on this question. one thing not going the president's way here, his handling of the situations in egypt and libya. more people disapprove than approve on that question. as for mr. romney, it appears he's still paying for the comments about the 47%, 51% of respondents to this nbc poll say recent impressions made by the republican candidate make him less favorable. they view him less favorably. 28% say more favorably. >>> both presidential candidates were off the trail as they prepared for tonight's debate. the president spent the past couple of days working with his team in nevada. took a quick break to visit the hoover dam. why not while you're there. mitt romney was in

front, word today that the obama campaign and democratic allies raised $181 million in september. that is the most either side has raised in a month this election cycle. no word yet on the romney camp's monthly total, but the campaign does say it's collected more than $12 million in online donations since wednesday's debate. that's a lot. and it says it has seen bigger crowds on the trail since that debate. more on these stories throughout the next hour. >>> and tonight a newly confident mitt romney guess back on the stump in the sunshine state. he is holding a rally at 6:30 p.m. in apopka, florida, where he has been hammering the president's job record, despite a rise in national employment. with the romney campaign, garrett, is the governor sticking to his guns on the economy, or do the new numbers change things? >> milissa, the only new change is governor romney is going to have to retire one of his favorite lines, is the unemployment rate remaining above%. we expect that line to disappear. but focus will stay the same, with perhaps a bit more of a target, talking about the de

aggressive but i don't believe he was more presidential. i believe the president obama handled himself with that dignified reserve is his hallmark. anybody that expected him to come out in an aggressive in your face way has not been watching the president for these last four years. i thought the president was particularly strong tonight, especially in contrasting the two economic views of these candidates. president obama's view of how we fix our economy. much more in line with main strewn americans believe, the middle class believes. the things that president clinton used, balanced approach. opportunity and, i thought that governor romney really didn't do anything to dissuade the general public from the view that he would like to go back to the days of the bush tax cuts for the wealthy and hope that this time, instead of growing deficits, and growing unemployment, that it grows jobs. so governor romney really needed a game changer tonight. i hate to say this but i find myself agreeing with chris christie. governor romney really needed to turn the world upside down. he really need ad g

dinner through my obama phone. this is an obama phone. i am a down the phone guide in 2012. when brent bozell asked me to emcee tonight's dinner is a little bit uncomfortable because you can't trust brent bozell or the people he surrounds himself with. they would sell out their mothers for one cheap laugh and then move on merrily. but i thought about it for a moment and i almost decline, but i thought, i'll go ahead. there's a free dinner and free drinks in it. so i go ahead and take him up on the author. and that is after my work in talk radio, which is a very unstable business and i could be fired pretty much any moment as has been proven at least once already.
